What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a traditional Oriental medicine practice that involves inserting thin, sterile needles into specific points on the body to promote health, healing and well-being. Practitioners use acupuncture to stimulate your body’s “qi,” or energy flow, while also unblocking obstructions or imbalances along the meridians (acupuncture points).

Many Western medicine practitioners view acupuncture as a natural, complementary therapy that can be used in conjunction with other conventional medical treatments to help manage certain conditions.

Some commonly experienced benefits of acupuncture include pain relief, stress reduction, improved sleep, enhanced immune function, relaxation, and overall improvement of the nervous system.

I’m getting acupuncture. What can I expect?

1. Consultation: Dr. Holly takes extra time during your first visit to understand your medical history, symptoms, concerns and treatment goals. She will then prescribe your personalized acupuncture health plan.

2. Preparation: You will be asked to lie down on a comfortable treatment table in a private treatment room. Dr. Holly will then insert thin needles into specific points on your body, which may cause a slight sensation of pressure, warmth or tingling at first.

3. Treatment: The needles will remain in place while you relax for a period of time. Some acupuncture treatments may also incorporate other techniques such as cupping or moxibustion during the session.

4. Aftercare: After the needles are removed, Dr. Holly may provide additional recommendations for self-care, such as staying hydrated and avoiding strenuous activities.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture isn’t painful, but it can be slightly uncomfortable when Dr. Holly first inserts and manipulates the needles into place. Any discomfort is usually brief, and Dr. Holly’s experience ensures a very gentle approach.

How many acupuncture treatments will I need?

The number of acupuncture sessions prescribed varies based on your specific health concerns, the severity of your condition, and how your body responds to treatment.

Dr. Holly typically recommends multiple sessions for effective treatment, usually 6-12, to ensure you enjoy acupuncture’s optimal therapeutic benefits. You can reduce the frequency of your sessions as your symptoms improve.
